Typographic calendar »REVISION« for DJ and Photographer Axel Gundermann [Yearroundmunich]
PROJECT
EDITORIAL DESIGN, TYPE DESIGN AND PRODUCTION CONCEPT
Photographers have a unique perspective on the world. They follow the light, are captivated by compositional perspectives and delay pressing the shutter until the perspective is 100% right. When a photographer enjoys traveling, inevitably, over time, hard drives fill up with images capturing moments, impressions and memories.
Axel Gundermann, who enriches Munich‘s nightlife under the DJ nom de guerre »Yearroundmunich,« wanted to give his photos a tangible, analog second life alongside their digital existence. Thus, the idea of creating a DIN A3 format photo calendar was born.
The title »Revision« was set, the preliminary selection of images was made, and after deciding to reduce the typography to the month names, I designed lettering for each month that either complements the effect of the images or creates tension through contrast.
The calendar pages are perforated at the top and are held together by a binding strip with punch holes to allow for hanging. To give the images a potential third life, the layout includes crop marks encouraging users to remove and frame the images, giving them a place of honor.
MAKING OF
Although design often involves control—anticipating not only the result but also its impact in application—it‘s often the small, unforeseen elements that add the necessary spice to a project.
This was also the case here, with a happy accident leading to the project’s quicker than planned conclusion. While the final image selection was still underway, I began the layout for the calendar and the design for the month lettering. Despite anticipating layout adjustments, the unexpectedly successful combination of image and lettering quickly convinced us: this design was ready for production.
